WWE Should Be Less Scripted

We all know that everything in WWE is scripted

The world of Sports Entertainment is a billion dollar company. It’s sports coming together with the theatrics of acting. WWE is widely regarded as the master of sports entertainment. Which is true.

WWE is #1 in the world.

Everything in WWE is scripted as mentioned, from what the wrestlers say, to what is done in the ring. Everything goes on paper first and then rehearsed. The WWE writer do tend to come up with good ideas that will work with the masses. Are some ideas worth throwing out? Of course.

But, the question is…is this method becoming too “old school” now?

I surely think so.

For the most part of the last decade WWE has been a complete shamble. The storylines have been bland and last only a month or even a day. It’s like they have no director telling them where to go. All of this is due to bad writing.

Sure, some writers in the company today do come up with good ideas, but the “higher ups” just crumble up the papers and say it isn’t good enough. I can only imagine how many great ideas are in the trash.

The higher ups are the problem here.

Take AEW as a GREAT example. They’re not really scripted. They allow their wrestlers to organically develop their characters on their own merits. Even more so, they allow for there them to come up with their own dialogue for the night. Therefore, AEW has really become must-see tv for me. Everything is just original and comes together like milk and cookies.

I tend to see where the wrestlers in WWE are speaking from the heart rather than remembering a script and vice-versa. Don’t get me wrong, there are those who do need a paper in front of them to show us what they’re made of. But, there’s also the veterans that know what to say and when to say it, so I strongly think that they should be allowed to stir away from something someone else wrote.

Take Roman Reigns and John Cena for an example.

They had one of the most explosive promos of 2017. This was when Roman Reigns was supposed to be the biggest babyface in the world (no one really liked him as one) and John Cena was already leaving the WWE for Hollywood. They went back and forth. With every line bashing on the other.

Both men said things that even Kurt Angle inside the ring was in awe. His jaw dropped with the things being said. They made personal remarks to one another. Most notably was when Roman actually forgot his line and said in silence for a good minute. John came in and said “It’s called a promo kid. You have to learn to do a promo if you want to be the big dog”. That line shook the entire arena. It was great.

This was a fabulous promo because this was two men speaking their minds and getting inside their characters heads and knowing what that character said. This wasn’t something that some tv writer backstage could write without thinking it’s too much.

It’s like in movies. Some of the most memorable moments in films are the scene where the actor improvises and completely turns the whole thing 180 degrees. Heath Ledger as Joker clapping inside the cell. Dustin Hoffman walking across the street before a car stops next to him and he utters the words “I’m walking here!”.

WWE should look at these moments in films and think a little.

Thus, I feel like WWE should start letting their superstars pick what topics they want to talk about that night and actually work alongside them instead of overpowering them. The compelling stories inside these people could be the biggest thing for them to happen.

Just recently, Roman Reign and John Cena got back at it again before Summerslam. They had again another killer promo. This time it was a bit more brutal and personal. They brought up more personal events. Roman mentioned John’s ex Nikki Bella and how Hollywood is his home now not the WWE. John attacked back stating that WWE is protecting Roman too much. He needs to get embarrassed. That Because of Roman Seth Rollins isn’t much anymore, even more he ran out Dean Ambrose out of WWE. The Dean Ambrose line KILLED.

Who write that segment? None other than Roman Reigns and John Cena themselves with the help of Paul Heyman.

The same freedom Vince gives his part-timers is the same freedom he needs to start giving his younger talent. The future of WWE is in their hands.

There has to be a way to meet in the middle.
