Wrestlemania went Hollywood, but wrestling took center stage

Wrestlemania is the biggest event for sports entertainment. It’s the super bowl of wrestling, the world series, the Stanley Cup, the World Cup, etc. It’s the time where wrestling fans excitement is through the roof and they make the effort to travel to Wrestlemania’s destination.

This year Wrestlemania was the first to really be created by Triple H. He had the daunting task to put on TWO star-studded shows. It wasn’t an easy task. He had to make sure the storylines concluded or would progress to the next chapter. He had to make sure to make Wrestlemania the talk of the town. He had to make sure that since it’s Hollywood, it’d have to be flashy and much bigger.

Wrestlemania 39 did in fact hit on every note. It was a great show. The matches were entertaining and moved at a steady pace. It felt like their wasn’t one bland moment, even when Miz and Snoop Dog held the microphones.

Night One

Austin Theory Vs John Cena — United States Championship

Theory and Cena kicked off Wrestlemania night one in a match we all knew far too familiar with. John and Theory’s rivalry didn’t build up for too long. This was more of a “test” for Austin Theory.

This was Austin’s first Wrestlemania and he didn’t disappoint.

The match was steady paced and Cena was able to get much more offense on Theory than I expected.

The outcome of the match was a bit too obvious. Cena is at the point of his wrestling career where he wants to put over as much of the new talent as he can. This could very well be the last new talent he put over and his time in the square circle is coming to an end.

Austin proved that he’s a force in WWE. He’s outstanding in the ring and he can sure talk-the-talk on the microphone. We’re clearly seeing the future of WWE in him.

Results: Austin Theory defeats John Cena with A-Town Down

Men’s Tag Team Showcase

This match was actually more entertaining than expected. Although it felt like a threw-away match, where some people just wanted their Wrestlemania moment, but this turned out to be quite the crowd pleaser.

Chad Gables was the MVP of the match. He’s always proving to us that he’s more than he seems. His strength is incredible. He’s agility reminds you of Lucha Libre. Plus, he was able to suplex Braun Strowman.

Viking Raider’s Ivar had his shining moment when he went to the top rope and decided to do a high-risk manuver.

Ricochet and Montez Ford had their shares of high-flying moves.

The “Awe” moment of the match was when they did a Tower Of Doom.

Montez Ford did a MASSIVE frog splash to Ricochet when he was on Dawkin’s knees.

Results: The Street Profits

Seth Rollins Vs Logan Paul

One of the most anticipated matches of the night. We last saw Logan Paul at Summerslam where he silenced his haters and delivered one of the best WRESTLING performances, not celebrity performances.

Logan had quite the entrance at Wrestlemania. He played out his inner Shawn Michaels and came down to the ring in a zip-line. Seth on the other hand showed off his fashion with an over-the-top coat that was covering his outfit which from the looks of it he took inspiration from Jeff Jarret.

The match was a builder. It started out a bit slow but gradually picked up. Logan once again proved that he isn’t just a shit-talker, he backs it up. He toyed with Seth in and out the ring, and had that cocky heel attitude.

Logan was accompanied by a Prime Drink mascot. Once outside the ring, the mascot was revealed to be KSI, which was a surprise.

Logan was setting up to do a frog splash from the top turnbuckle to the announcers table, but he decided to chug his Prime, while KSI was on his Iphone, taunting Seth. Seth took the moment to throw KSI onto the table seconds before Logan launched himself and slammed onto KSI. For some reason I found it to be extremely funny how KSI was laid out.

Logan went for a coast-to-coast but Seth popped up and caught him with a super kick mid-air.

Results: Seth Rollins

Trish Stratus, Lita, Becky Lynch Vs Damage CTRL

Before the bell rang, all six women started a brawl. Trish, Lita, and Becky cleaned the ring out.

It was the match we expected from these women.

Trish and Lita showed that they still got the moves. Damage CTRL showed that they can hang with the legends. Even Dakota and Iyo had there share of moments during the match.

Iyo did her signaure Moonsault of the top ring to the women outside the ring.

Trish was expected to turn heel during the match, and it didn’t happen. was it a lost opportunity? Not really. If she was to turn heel, it would’ve taken away all the attention from the great match we got.

Results: Trish, Lita, Becky win

Rating: 7/10

Rey Mysterio Vs Dominik Mysterio

First off, the entrances for both men were one of the best to happen at Wrestlemania. These will live on in Wrestlemania replays.

Rey Mysterio came out in a Lowride with Snoop Dogg and once the car came out to the stadium, Eddie Guerrero’s theme song came out. Chills went down peoples spine. It was a beautiful homage to Eddie.

Dominik’s entrance went in-line with his character. He came out with a police escort and he his hands were cuffed. He wore one of his fathers masks. To who might not know, it was the same mask Rey Mysterio wore at Halloween Havoc ’97. It was the perfect way to mock his father.

The build to this match has been nothing but great. From being the dream father and son tag-team, to Dominik wanting to carve his own path and see his fathers name crumble. This was a long time in the making and we finally saw it unfold.

Rey and Dominik gave it their all. We saw Rey take out his frustration on his son, but we also saw a bit of reluctance from him. Dominik had no heart in this match.

Dominik taunted his mother and sister in the stand. He threw water to his sister. His mother had enough and smacked him in the face.

Fin Balor and Damien Priest came in and started to get involved. Quickly Santos Escobar and Legado De Fantasma or as we now know them by the “new” Latino World Order. They had their own brawl outside the ring.

Dominik grabbed a steel chain from Damien Priest’s coat. Bad Bunny quickly went in and took it from him, where he allowed Rey to get Dominik with a 619 and then the diving frog splash.

Results: Rey Mysterio wins

Charlotte Flair Vs Rhea Ripley — Smackdown Women’s Championship

This was an instant classic. This was a rematch of their 2020 feud where we saw Charlotte defeat a then NXT star Rhea Ripley. That still was a bad decision.

Fast forward to 2023 where Rhea won the Royal Rumble and was destined to do battle once again with Charlotte. Both women are dominating both Raw and Smackdown. They were the bar and it was set high.

The match itself was just unbelievable. They went back and forth. There were a ton of false-finishes. Charlotte had a scary bump where it looked like she landed on her face when Rhea did a german suplex.

Charlotte did Rhea with a handful of spears only to come short. These were the moments where I thought it was over.

Rhea slammed Charlotte’s face to the ring post and delivered a HUGE Riptide off the top rope.

Results: Rhea Ripley — New Women’s Champion

Rating: 10/10

The Usos Vs Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn — Undisputed Tag Team Championship

One of the best long-term storytelling to date. The Usos have been undefeated since becoming tag team champions. To most, it was getting stale and bland, but to many others it was the perfect storm.

Sami and The Bloodline have been going at it for months at this point. Sami turned on them at the Royal Rumble and from their The Usos’s were ordered to deal with them. This was definitely worth being the main event at Wrestlemania.

Sami and Jey start the match off. You immediately sensed the tension between the two. They knew each other really well. The crowd was electric during the match too. It made you want to be there to cheer and boo.

Once the match really got going it was through the roof. Every time someone did a signature move, you thought it was over, but the person kicked out. Both teams pulled out an arsenal of moves to try to keep each other down.

There was even the thought behind everyone mind that Kevin might just turn on Sami.

The Usos’s did an extreme amount of super kicks to Kevin and Sami.

Kevin hit an avalanche neck breaker and tagged Sami in. Sami did THREE Helluva Kicks to Jey and the count…1…2…3!!!! yes they did it!

Finally, someone was able to stop the Usos’s! it was an amazing moment. Honestly, it was about time they dropped the tag team belts to someone else. It will a moment that will be re-visited down the line.

Results: Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn

Rating: 10/10
