Is AEW Signing Too Many “Big” Names?

AEW has been alive for more than 2 years.

They have solidified themselves as top contenders in the world of sports entertainment. Quite frantically, they are on the top of the world as of this writing.

They’ve been on a hell of a roll lately, beating out their competitor WWE.

I like to think of this whole AEW vs WWE thing as something in the lines of Apple Vs Samsung. The thought of it just makes me laugh.

With all the momentum that AEW is having…is it possible that they’re just signing too many big names?

I mean…some of these wrestlers aren’t cheap. They know that their names will bring in views for the show, so they expect to get paid a massive sum.

The question lingers in the back of my mind every time I see that they’ve signed yet another free agent to the company. Sure, it’s great seeing these wrestlers get another opportunity somewhere else. A place where they feel like they could shine.

But, with an already stuffed roster. Their starlight may not shine so bright as they think. There’s always that strong possibility that they will get overlooked after the hype of their debut subsides.

Can the roster become bloated?

Of course.

Which is what I fear the most.

In the eyes of the wrestlers (who is seeking a promotion) AEW just sounds like the best choice. It’s a worldwide phenomenon. You are sure to get serious TV time. The contract might speak to you. It will be a place where you could build your own character and showcase your talent. It all sounds inviting.

What’s the worst that could happen? Well…you would be put as a mid-carder. The same place you were in the other promotion. Even lower mid-carder.

It can happen.

Even more so, can Tony Khan afford to keep hiring these expensive people? The short answer is yes. But, at what cost? They will expect something better or close to what they were getting paid before? That’s more money lost, if the person isn’t as good as he/she think they are.

Technically speaking, Tony Khan can sign whoever. There’s no budget for higher talent. He mostly cares about the media attention it will bring to his company.

Don’t get me wrong.

Tony Khan (AEW Owner)

Tony Khan has done an amazing job with AEW. I praise him for that. He has made the promotion what it is today. He truly cares about the sport and it shows. He cares about what the fans wants to see. He gives it to us.

He doesn’t care about being a TV personality. He would much rather sit at gorilla and oversee the entire operation.

In conclusion, free agents are expensive buys. So, there might be that chance of “overload” in the company and the complaints might start to arise and cause inner problems.

It might be a hole they can’t dig themselves out of.

For me, I have faith in AEW and Tony Khan and what they decide to do.
