The times that still live with us

WWE has had plenty of tear-jerking moments during its existence. From wrestlers having to retire from real-life injuries to the sudden death of a wrestler.

When writing for television you want to get a reaction from your fans. You do need these emotional moments to feel close to them. Storytelling is at its best when your hero beats the villain and becomes the greatest thing on earth.

The emotions they make us feel is what drives us to talk about the promo or the match on social media or with your friends.

Some moments have let us sad, while others have left us completely devastated, maybe even choked up. It’s just pure proof on how invested we are in the story and how much we love wrestling.

There’s some moments here where sadly wrestlers have passed away.

Roman Reigns Leukaemia Reveal

Roman has always been a polarizing figure in WWE. Whether you love him or hate him, he knows how to stir the pot. But there was a certain moment where every fan at home and in the arena was on his side.

He opened Raw by revealing that his Leukaemia came back.

You can just see the shock in the audience. No one saw this coming, it was almost a bitter-sweet moment as well because we all came as one in this horrible moment and rooted for this god-like figure to push through.

The downpour of love and support was amazing.

Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose (Jon Moxley) joined their brother side-by-side and for one final time they did their Sheild salute. Seth Rollins trying to hold back his tears made it all more chokable.

Thankfully Roman’s Leaukaemia went away!

Chris Benoit And Eddie Guerrero Hug At Wrestlemania 20

This is a prime example where an “emotional” moment doesn’t have to be a sad one. This is also a critical moment in the life of Chris Benoit who lived out his dream in becoming WWE Champion.

The closing shot of Wrestlemania 20 is solidified in my memory forever.

Eddie and Chris were best friends, practically brothers. They always dreamed of being world champions together and standing in the spotlight hand-in-hand.

That dream happened and the tears flowed down Chris’s eyes when he turned around and saw his best friend standing before him, clapping his hands, and taking in the moment.

Confetti fell from the ceiling, the crowd cheered for what seemed like hours. Both men didn’t hold back their tears, they let it all out as they hugged in the center of the ring.

One of the most beautiful moments in WWE.

Edge Retirement

This one hit us all hard.

There’s been plenty of goodbye speeches from retiring wrestlers. The difference with those is that we the fans knew they were leaving. They had their final match and left it all in the ring.

unexpected retirements are a different thing. They come out of nowhere and we just get in a lost for words. Just take Paige and Daniel Bryans sudden retirement from wrestling.

Although Edge returned to in-ring action at the 2020 Royal Rumble.

The speech he made in 2011 was just too sad. One minute he was wrestling his heart out and giving us our money-worth, and the next he came out and said he had to retire due to a neck injury.

Shawn Michael and Ric Flair

“I’m sorry…I love you”

Shawn mouthed off those words and even though we couldn’t hear it, we felt it. It echoed throughout the world.

Wrestlemania 24 saw the retirement match for Ric Flair. He fought his heart out that night and give it his all. In the final moments of the match you could tell that Ric knew his time was winding down. Every spot that passed him by just got him closer to the end.

It was fairly obvious that Ric was going to lose the match. But, we all had that faith that maybe, just maybe, he would pull through.

In the final moments of the match, Ric Flair stood up, he was crying, he kept telling Shawn to give it to him, give him the Sweet Chin Music. Shawn stood in the corner of the ring, extremely reluctant. It actually seemed like he didn’t want to go through with the plan.

Ric kept taunting him and taunting him. He wasn’t going down without a fight.

Shawn then mouthed out the famous line before delivering him the final Sweet Chin Music. This was emotional storytelling at its finest.

Owen Hart’s Tribute

Owen Hart’s death is still talked about to this day. His tragic happened in 1999 at the Over The Edge Pay-Per-View when his harness malfunctioned and he fell from the ceiling to the ring post.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jim Ross had the horrible task of announcing Owen’s death during the broadcast.

The next night, WWE decided to dedicate Raw in his name. The wrestlers and friends of Owen told stories about Owen. The love and respect for him was through the roof. From wrestlers trying to keep their composure, to the fans in attendance holding back their tears.

Stone Cold Steve Austin closed the night out by coming into the ring and raising a cold one in the memory of Owen Hart.

R.I.P Owen Hart…The king of Harts.

Eddie Guerrero’s Death

This is a tough one. This one strikes the core of many who remembers the day this happened. The passing of Eddie just completely left the world dumbfounded.

When it was announced, it felt like us the wrestling fans lost a family member.

Seeing all the WWE superstars lined up next to one of Eddie’s Impala’s started the show off. They were all trying to keep it together, but it was just too hard, it was impossible. There was NOT one dried eye in that arena or household you were watching this episode of Raw that night.

No one could process what just happened.

The entire night consisted of tributes from Eddie’s fellow wrestlers and closest friends. All the tributes got harder and harder to hear as everyone slowly let out tears and looked broken.

I think we’re never recover from this tragedy in 2005.

R.I.P Eddie Guerrero
