Booker T And Triple H Controversy
Triple H has had a reputation for burying talent.
If he didn’t like this person or that person, he’d simply use his backstage power to make sure his opponent was a goner.
Sadly, that’s the way it was.
Ironically, Triple H also had one of the biggest losing streaks in Wrestlemania history. He barely seemed to win any match at the grandest stage of them all. So, going into Wrestlemania 19 his chances seemed very slim. I thought he was going to lose.
That wasn’t the case.
Booker T lost that night and the upset from fans was quickly noticed. It was seen as unforgivable.
Booker T was a rising star in 2003. Coming in from WCW, he actually had quite the push so early on. He was a five-time champion and looked to rake in a sixth title win.
So, what’s so controversial about Triple H Vs Booker T?
It wasn’t the match. It was the build up towards the match that set the world on fire.
Most famously was the Triple H and Booker T promo they delivered on Raw. Both men stood in the ring and sized each other up. But, something was off. Triple H didn’t like as menacing as he would normally look when he’s in front of his opponents.
He looked calm and collective and just looked like he wasn’t impressed at all.
He didn’t take Booker T serious.
The words that Triple H said that night still resonate with us till this day.
“You’re going to Wrestlemania, but the fact is Booker, somebody like you doesn’t get to be world champion. People like you don’t deserve it. That’s reserved for people like me”.
He continued to belittle Booker T as the segment wen on. Saying that he was there just to entertain people and himself. He wasn’t a wrestler, he was an entertainer. He on to make comments about Booker T’s nappy hair.
Triple H has always been known to really portray his character to the bone. He was basically a method actor. He loved to be the bad guy.
So, with all the messed up things he said to Booker T, there should be a light at the end of the tunnel, right?
There wasn’t. Triple H won the match and pretty much proved that he was “right” all along.
The story lacked retribution.
This is often considered the worst booking in WWE of all time.
Even in 2003, before the whole “cancel culture” movement started. It was considered bad. I understand that WWE loved to push boundaries and see how far they could go before too much is too much. But, this was just so distasteful and lacked of substance. They thought that the route the storyline should go was being stereotypical but it backfired on them.
Booker T has commented on the matter and has always said that he’s okay with what happened and he has moved on from it. But, I think he is holding back on his true feelings because he’s still under WWE payroll.
At least years after this horrible time, Booker T did end up becoming a multiple time champion and he even became a King Of The Ring. Thus, bringing us his best work yet…King Booker!
